Following high school, he received an athletic scholarship to play baseball at Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kansas for the 1988 season. After the 1988 season he received an athletic scholarship to Concordia University in Austin, Texas and was a member of the baseball team through the 1992 season. He served as a student assistant coach for the 1992 season while finishing a bachelor’s degree in Accounting.

In the spring of 1995, Ty joined on as an instructor for Renz Baseball Academy in Lilburn, Georgia outside of Atlanta. During his two year stint in Georgia, he provided private instruction in all facets of the game, coordinated and facilitated a fall instructional league which consisted of over 75 children between the ages of five and seven years of age, helped oversee various camps, coached a select 15 and 16 year old traveling team, and lectured at seminar public speaking engagements on behalf of Renz Baseball Academy.

After moving back to Texas in 1997, Ty continued to provide private instruction to players of all ages. From 2003-2007, Ty coached the Tomball High School varsity baseball team during the summer and fall seasons. In 2006-2007, Ty coached the Tomball Thunder, an 11-12 year old AAA select team of boys from the Tomball area.
